A skilled networker, she teaches executives the importance of powerful and meaningful communications, how to build a reliable network of interpersonal relationships, and ultimately, how to engage top talent within organizations to maximize productivity. She has trained across races, genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.
Before joining the coaching community, she was the Regional Vice President of Human Resources for Latin America at Citigroup, overseeing her division across 23 countries and 7,000 employees, including operations in South Florida.
As an executive, she learned to navigate rapid change, handle cross-functional and multicultural dynamics, merge and acquisition challenges, operation reductions, talent recruitment, management development, executive coaching, and team building.
She also served as HR Director for Pepsi-Cola International in Latin America, directing bottling plants in 13 different countries. With solid experience in Energy and Oil, she began her career with Maraven Venezuela in upstream and downstream operations (formerly Shell Oil). Since then, she has consulted and trained hundreds of executives and managers across nearly all industries on five continents. Her previous experiences include Detroit Edison, Chrysler, HAY Management Consultants, Monsanto Biogenetics-Spain division, and PDVSA, Venezuela's major oil company with 40,000 global employees and ranked fifth worldwide.
She founded the first global network of Spanish-speaking coaches, now with over 120 members (leading the ICF’s Spanish Practice Community) and served as President of the South Florida Chapter for the International Coaching Federation. She is also the founder of Sabertela, a global virtual education company providing leadership and management training for Spanish-speaking leaders. A frequent keynote speaker at management conferences worldwide, she has appeared repeatedly on Univision, the largest Spanish-language television network in the Americas. She has contributed management articles to Hispanic Business Journal, Latina Style, Reforma (Mexico newspaper), Work Environment (Mexico), Knowledge and Development (Argentina), and other Latin American magazines. She also serves on the Executive Coaching Summit committee, a group of global executive coaching experts.
Her academic background includes a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Sociology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and an MBA from the University of Michigan. She is a certified coach from Coach University (the world's largest coaching school) and holds a Professional Certified Coach credential from the International Coach Federation.
She is an affiliated coach, facilitator, and trainer for numerous international organizations and is an adjunct faculty member of the Leadership Development Center at the University of Florida, representing the Authentic Leadership Institute, Harvard Mass in Latin America. Marilena teaches in Wharton School's advanced management program. Married with four stepchildren, she enjoys reading biographies, yoga, Zumba, traveling, photography, swimming, and scuba diving. She is a passionate advocate for advancing Latin leaders in the corporate environment.
